SARVA video: A picture is worth a thousand words

Take two. Video producer Mark Klein interviews Prof Roland Schulze at the Users' Workshop.
The video team captures the important process of stakeholder engagement on film at the first SARVA Users' Workshop.
The video, an important component of the SARVA marketing and communications toolkit, will also be used at global change summits and exhibitions, SARVA users workshops and other stakeholder engagements to communicate the nature and practical application of the SA Risk and Vulnerability Atlas, as well as milestones in the development of the SARVA project.

The video, an important component of the SARVA marketing and communications toolkit, will also be used at climate change summits and exhibitions, SARVA users workshops and other stakeholder engagements to communicate the nature and practical application of the SA Risk and Vulnerability Atlas, as well as milestones in the development of the SARVA project.

The connection to the Department of Science and Technology's Global Change Grand Challenge and the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) will be highlighted. The video will also look at the development of the electronic spatial database in collaboration with the South African Environmental Observation Network (SAEON), who will host the database for the SARVA project.

Key issues such as risk and vulnerability will be explored, as well as the elements that set this Atlas apart from past atlas initiatives in the SADC region.

The video will also play a strong educational role by illustrating how information from the Atlas is used for the six SARVA case studies. It will illustrate how ecosystems and people were impacted by global change, how global change scientists used relevant data from the Atlas in their research and - in turn - stored relevant research data in the Atlas data repository, and how the information in the Atlas assisted local government officials in their decision-making. It will also show how these decisions could filter through to adaptation and mitigation policy.

The video is expected to play an important role in equipping SARVA stakeholders to make informed decisions about matters relating to global change and adaptation.
